Many countries are pulling out of the COP29 climate talks

Representatives of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) walked out of the COP29 climate talks in Baku, after rejecting a $250bn pledge from wealthy nations to tackle the effects of climate change.

“We cannot be expected to agree to a document that shows contempt for our vulnerable people,” the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) said in a statement.

Their nations are at the forefront of global warming and AOSIS has been one of the most vocal groups in calling for urgent climate action.

Yalchin Rafiyev, Azerbaijan’s lead negotiator, said the COP is “aiming for a fair and ambitious outcome” and a “fair and ambitious” financial agreement that addresses the needs and priorities of developing countries in Baku.
