Lyle Menendez, Wife Rebecca Sneed’s Relationship Timeline Before Release
Lyle Menendez he has a wife Rebecca Sneed by his side as he is serving a life sentence for murder.
Before Lyle found love with Sneed, he made headlines after becoming a person of interest in his parents’ murder. Lyle and his brother, Erik Menendezthey were charged with two counts of murder in 1990.
Lyle began corresponding with the former model Anna Eriksson shortly after his arrest. Their whirlwind romance led to the two almost getting married one day before Erik and Lyle’s sentencing. Eventually, court and prison officials prevented the event from taking place.
The two trials that followed resulted in Erik and Lyle being convicted and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. On the other hand, Erik and Lyle have maintained that their mother and father abused them physically, emotionally and sexually and that their actions were self-defense.

On the day of his sentencing in 1996, Lyle secretly married Eriksson via conference call. The New York Times reports when Lyle and Erik – who served as his brother’s best man – were on the phone at the wedding while their defense attorney Leslie Abramson put a ring on Eriksson’s Lyle’s finger.
However, the California Department of Corrections did not consider Lyle and Eriksson’s marriage legal. After five years of marriage, Eriksson filed for divorce in 2001 after discovering that Lyle was having affairs with other women.
Sneed was one of the people Lyle wrote to after his arrest. They kept in touch and by 2003, Lyle and Sneed were married. Unlike Erik’s wife, Tammi MenendezSneed is no longer seen at all.
“People judge, and he has to put up with a lot,” Lyle said People in 2017. “But he has the courage to face obstacles. It would be easy to walk away, but I’m so thankful he didn’t.”
Sneed and Lyle now have a chance to meet in person after the Los Angeles County District Attorney recommended in October 2024 that a judge sentence Erik and Lyle to 50 years in prison, which would make them eligible for parole and release from prison.

1993
When Lyle first contacted him, Sneed was a magazine reporter who wrote for him while in prison. The two became friends – and stayed in touch for 10 years – before falling in love and eventually exchanging vows.
2003
Lyle and Sneed married two years after her divorce from Eriksson. Lyle was 35 and Sneed was 33 when they were married at Mule Creek State Prison. Over the years, Sneed transitioned from journalism to law. He is currently an attorney living in California and visits Lyle every week.
2017
“Our interaction is usually free of distractions and we probably have more intimate conversations than most married couples who are distracted by things that happen in life,” said Lyle. People at the time about the lack of conjugal visits between her and Sneed. (California prisons allow spousal visits, but inmates serving life sentences without parole are barred from such rights. The law was changed in 2016 but since Erik and Lyle committed a violent crime against another family member, they are still not eligible for family visits.)
Sneed himself did not do an interview and preferred to support Lyle while he was unknown.

2017
While thinking about his relationship with Sneed, Lyle explained to him ABC News how they saved their marriage, saying, “One thing I’ve learned is that your physical comfort is less important than your connection with the people around you. I’ve found that I can have a healthy marriage that’s complex and built around conversation and finding creative ways to connect, to share, without all of the usual trappings of marriage about going out to dinner and having more intimate time together. and so on.”
2024

One month after the release of MonstersLos Angeles District Attorney George Gascón announced in October 2024 that a new trial was being held due to new evidence in the murders of Lyle and Erik. Gascón issued an update later that month when he recommended that Erik and Lyle’s sentences be reduced to 50 years, which would allow them to be released on parole if approved by a judge. (Gascón later lost his re-election bid.)
In November 2024, the Daily Mail he said Lyle was dating a British college student, but Sneed later opened up about his relationship with Lyle.
“Guys! This is NOT a cheating scandal. “Lyle and I have been separated for some time but we remain friends with a big family,” he wrote on Facebook. “I continue to write his Facebook pages, with comments from him, and I am forever committed to the fight for the freedom of Lyle and Erik, as it has been seen over the years.”
