Although Russell and Ward did not publicize much about their relationship, he was very supportive of her Idol the trip.
“I hear that different voice saying, ‘You’ve got a job to do,’ and I think that was the case out there. He added, “I remember looking at Tyler and I was just like, ‘I’m going to do this and I’m not going to hide anymore.’ I remember when MeeMaw died and we had to be alone with her, I remember holding her hand, like, ‘I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I’m going to do something with my gift. ‘ It was almost like a terrible compliment that I was doing.”
Russell then remembered that Lynn used to tell him, “God, you don’t give a plumber not to use them. (Lynn died in 2022 at age 90.)
“He used to say, ‘He gave you a gift. You have to use it.’ So, I navigated that and I still navigate it today, but I knew that would be a place for me to do it.”
Russell was tested Idol with a piano rendition of the original song titled “Skinny,” which was a collaboration with Ward.
“I released that song with Song House, and Tyler actually drives Song House,” he said. He said, ‘You have to do it. We have to release a song.’ Then, seeing all of its response, I said, ‘This is bigger than me. I need to get out of the way.’ … To release it [was] special.”
