LOONA’s Yves and Hyeju Talk About the Protests Following the Failed Impeachment Vote of South Korean President Yoon
President Yoon Suk Yeol issued a public apology on Thursday following widespread criticism of his controversial declaration of martial law earlier this month. “I am very sorry for causing anxiety to our citizens,” said Yoon while speaking to television. He says this as protests continue across the country fueled by public outcry over what many see as the destruction of the will of the people.
Yoon’s backlash intensified after his government tried to justify the declaration of martial law as a measure to maintain stability in the face of unrest. Opponents argued that it was a disproportionate response, violating the freedoms of the South Korean people.
Despite growing discontent, the National Assembly’s vote on impeachment failed to pass, leaving Yoon in office for the time being. This heavily defeated proposal did nothing to quell public anger, as protesters gathered in major cities, demanding that he step down.
Among those who joined the organization are famous South Korean celebrities, including members of the popular girl group LOONA. Yves, a member of the group, expressed solidarity with the protesters in a heartfelt statement:
“Every day I think of ways I can help, even if I’m far away… It’s cold, so everyone, be careful not to catch a cold.” Thank you so much!”
Her bandmate, Hyeju, took her activism further by going to the protest and sharing a photo of the event on social media. In his caption, he addressed possible criticism of his participation:
“Some people may feel uncomfortable that I am expressing my opinion about this, but I am a citizen of this country before I am an idol, so I think this is the right thing to do. Let’s be strong!!!!”
Hyeju
The support of elites like Yves and Hyeju has empowered the younger protesters, many of whom see the idols as expressions of their values.
