Despite their creative differences – Malik said in an interview with Beats 1 radio station in 2016 that he “didn’t really want to be there” during his One Direction days – the four came together to release a joint statement the day after Payne’s death.

According to a source, all five members of One Direction were “in talks to do one last reunion show” before Payne’s death. Although that is still on hold, it is still on the table.

Payne died on October 16 after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires, Argentina. A partial autopsy showed that Payne had “pink cocaine” – a recreational drug usually a mixture of ketamine, MDMA and methamphetamine – in his system when he died, along with cocaine, benzodiazepine and crack.

In addition to their joint statement, the remaining members of One Direction each shared personal gifts with Payne after his death.

“I feel beyond lucky to have you in my life but I’m having trouble saying goodbye,” Tomlinson wrote on Instagram. “I’m so thankful that we’ve gotten closer since the band, talking on the phone for hours, reminiscing about all the thousands of wonderful memories we had together is a luxury I thought I’d have for the rest of my life. I would have liked to share the stage with you again, but it will not happen.”

Styles shared that he was “really saddened by Liam’s passing,” noting that “the late singer’s greatest joy was making other people happy.”

Horan, who saw Payne in the weeks before his death at Horan’s concert in Buenos Aires, noted that he felt “very lucky” that they had just connected.

“Sadly, I didn’t know that after saying goodbye and hugging him that night, I would be saying goodbye forever. It’s sad,” added Horan. “Thank you for everything, Payno. I love you brother.”

Meanwhile, Malik, who has had a rough time with Payne over the years, wrote a heartfelt Instagram post, calling Payne “the most worthy member” of the group “in every way.”
