The Wolf Man
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, Leigh Whannell revealed his unusual design for a werewolf in the future. The Wolf Man the remake was inspired by Heath Ledger’s Joker.
It was difficult. It was strange, because it was like you said, there were many versions of this. I’ve edited all the different versions, I have a PDF of everyone from Lon Chaney to David Norton The American Werewolf, Crying, Dog Soldiers. I’ve had all the looks in front of me, and I’m just staring at you, and I’m like, “Okay, now where do I come in?” You know what was the biggest inspiration for me, was Heath Ledger’s version of the Joker. Not so much in looks, but I had a picture of him on my desk as Joker because I really like what they did there with the character.
They stayed true to what the Joker was, but they just took it [to another level]. You’ve never seen that version of the Joker before. Not at that time. People still love it. Remember when they first released that picture of his face on that one sheet? Social media wasn’t as crazy in 2008 as it is now, but I remember Twitter blowing up. It was like, “Is that the Joker?” I find it very inspiring what they did with that character and how they approached him. And I was thinking [about] if I can take their approach to the Wolf Man, and I think I have. So that text that I had with all the different pictures of all the different Wolf Men, when I put my version of it, it didn’t look like one of them. And I said, “Ooh.”
Credit doesn’t go to me either. Go to Arjen Tuiten, makeup artist. I found him and said, “I want to show you a picture, but I can’t.” I want to see something.” He models. We were talking a lot, I was telling him what I wanted, and he’s like, “I think I know what you mean. Let me go.” And he ended up making this model of an inferior creature. He actually built, as part of a barn, almost like what you can see down here for sale. It was like a barn with grass on the floor and there was this creature lying there. It was so big.
And I was just watching it the first time, and I was like, “That’s it. It looked perfect.” You know what? I never had notes. I said, “That’s what we have to do.” It doesn’t [happen often]. Usually in LA, in Hollywood, it’s like, “Can we change this?” S–t, every screenplay I’ve written has just been full of notes. But when I saw the maquette, the model that Arian was making, I said, “I have no notes to give you [improve this]”- I just said, “Do this.”
