OVER 970,000 power connections were affected by Super Tropical Storm “Kristine” (International Name: Trami), according to the National Electrification Administration (NEA).
At a press conference Wednesday, NEA director Eric B. Campoto said the 86 affected electric cooperatives from 52 states and 12 territories are “under close scrutiny.”
“Of the 86 electricity cooperatives, 50 are operating normally, 29 are partially disrupted, six are completely disrupted, and one still does not have an updated report,” said Mr. Campoto.
The cost of initial damage due to Tropical Cyclone Kristine reached about P1 million. This could increase as the power cooperatives are still evaluating the data and the typhoon has not yet arrived, he said.
Meanwhile, National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) said that several transmission lines in Luzon and Visayas are unavailable.
Paul Michael R. Azur, manager of NGCP’s geomatics and command center, said that 23 69-kilovolt (kV) lines of 23 69-kilovolt (kV) lines were affected, 16 of which were lines then they already have power and one of the two 230-kV lines was not available. it was already online.
“The remaining 230-kV (lines) have no impact on the grid, although, we will check what happened to these lines if the weather permits,” he said.
The grid operator said it has mobilized its staff and is conducting monitoring. Simultaneous restoration works are also carried out in more accessible areas.
Manila Electric Co. (Meralco), which supplies electricity to Metro Manila and nearby areas, earlier assured its customers that its workers are ready to respond to power supply problems that may arise. – Sheldeen Joy Talavera
