Kindle Colorsoft owners complain about a yellow bar on the e-reader screen

People have started receiving their orders for Amazon’s first color e-reader, the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition, and many are saying they were disappointed to find a yellow, colored strip at the bottom of the display. Complaints about the $279.99 e-reader’s display have spread online and lowered its Amazon star rating, and some customer service representatives are reporting that a fix is on the way.

It’s possible that the color shift will be fixed with a software update, as one respondent posted a screenshot where a customer service agent immediately confirmed that Amazon is working on a fix. Many people mentioned in other threads that the problem did not appear until after it’s the first software update, so there might be something to that. We’ve reached out to Amazon for comment.

It is unclear how widespread the issue has become. On Amazon’s website, where the Kindle Colorsoft sits at a 2.6 star rating as of this writing, the majority of both positive and negative reviews point to flexibility. Some say the yellow bar is invisible, while others say it’s too distracting to maintain.

Our new e-reader review unit falls into the previous category – The VergeAndrew Liszewski, who is currently testing the device, said the discoloration is more noticeable in photos than in real life, and he wouldn’t have noticed if it weren’t for complaints from others. You can see for yourself in the pictures below.
