The UK launch of the Riyadh Season opened with a loss to Turki Alalshikh’s favorite fighter.
Mark Chamberlain was concussed and stripped of points when he lost by decision to Josh Padley. The unbeaten Brits battle saw Padley win by scores of 96-92, 96-92 and 95-93 in their junior welterweight bout.
Chamberlain has emerged as the Riyadh Season regular but jumped off to a slow start in his first home battle in ten months. Padley arrived with the intention of shocking the world and forced the great Chamberlain out of his comfort zone.
Both fights were cut from normal hips. Padley pushed his wound to target Chamberlain’s body whenever he had to fight inside. Portsmouth’s Chamberlain wanted to bully the young Yorkshire boxer but his anger was the ineffective part.
Things took a turn for the worse for Chamberlain when he was knocked out in the eighth round. Padley delivered a ‘peach of a punch’ in the form of a left hook to deliver a stunning knockdown. The 28-year-old player was only hit four times in the fight.
Chamberlain’s fate was sealed at that point, even more so one round later. Referee Victor Loughlin awarded a point after repeatedly warning Chamberlain for various fouls and infringements. Ring’s No. The 9-rated lightweight was not disappointed with his chances of victory and sought a knockout at that point. To his credit, he beat Padley down but the damage was already done on the scorecards.
Padley improved to 15-0 (4 knockouts) with the biggest win of his career. Chamberlain dropped to 16-1 (12 KOs) with the loss after winning a stoppage in Riyadh on May 18 and March 8. The five-fight knockout streak also came with a stoppage loss.
Padley-Chamberlain opened the six-fight DAZN/PPV.com pay-per-view event. Daniel Dubois (21-2, 20 KOs) defends his IBF heavyweight title against Anthony Joshua (28-3, 25 KOs) in the main event.
