Jinger Duggar and Jeremy Vuolo’s 1st Year of Marriage Was ‘Tough’

Jinger Duggar with her husband, Jeremy Vuolothey showed sincerity in the early days of their marriage.

On the Wednesday, September 18, episode of their “Jinger & Jeremy Podcast,” the couple, who tied the knot in 2016, both surprised each other with their first year of marriage.

“I look back on the last 8 years [and] walking, ‘That year was a breeze.’ … But you [said] last night, ‘No, I think it was very difficult,’ and I think I agree with you,” said Vuolo, 37. “We went through a lot of adjustments and a lot of change.”

Duggar, 30, noted that the struggles had “nothing to do” with her and Vuolo.

“We got along very well,” he said. “I would say that there were challenges just because I had to fix them. It was like the challenges of fixing things. “

I 19 Children and CountinThe alum shared that living with Vuolo for the first time and starting their lives together was the “easy part” of the life transition. It was leaving his extended family in Arkansas for Laredo, Texas, which left him in awe.

“It was really difficult. I had to see for myself who I am,” he said. “I had an identity problem saying, ‘OK.’ I know who I was in my family, but now who am I as a person?’”

Jinger was beginning to re-examine some of the basic Christian teachings he had been raised with.

“I realized that some of these things I thought I really liked, like their teachings [Institute in Basic Life Principles founder] Bill GothardI realize that I don’t believe that anymore,” he recalled. “And that was a big change.”

Jinger wrote a book about his staunch Christian upbringing, Truly Free: Separating Faith from Fearwhich was released in January 2023. In the memoir, she recalls being taught that she “had to do something” with her future partner to “keep him faithful,” which resulted in her not expressing her opinions during her first year of marriage.

“[Jeremy] he kindly encouraged me to speak my mind and let him know if I disagreed with something – and to be unapologetic about it. He didn’t want me to play or pretend. He wanted me to be me. More than once he said, ‘Jing, you’re not a Stepford wife,’” she wrote. When he started to say that, I asked, ‘What is a Stepford wife?’ When he explained this idea, I realized … he wanted me to think about myself and find out what I believe in and what I like and don’t like. “

Despite realizing how challenging their first year of marriage was, Jinger said Wednesday that “the growth that happened during that time was huge.”

“We were able to weather those storms and come out strong,” added Vuolo.

Jinger and Vuolo share daughters Felicity, 6, and Evangeline Jo, 3. Jinger said on an episode of the duo’s podcast last month that they are game to expand their family, especially with twins.

“If we had another child, twins, I would be happy,” she said. “I feel like it’s going to be a lot of work at first but you just … it’s a quick way to have children.”
