Jeep electric vehicles recalled for ‘risk of fire,’ Chrysler said

More than 150,000 Jeep electric vehicles (EVs) are being recalled over concerns the vehicles may catch fire while stationary or being driven.

The recall, announced by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Tuesday, affects Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEVs. The recall was initiated by Stellantis, who owns Chrysler and Jeep.

118,230 Jeep Wrangler PHEVs and 35,802 Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEVs are affected by the recall.

According to the NHTSA, the vehicles are being recalled due to “the risk of fire while stationary or being driven.”

“Owners should park their vehicles outside and away from buildings and other vehicles until their vehicle is repaired,” explained the press release. “Furthermore, owners should not charge unrepaired vehicles, because the risk of fire is higher in a charged battery and the risk of fire decreases when the battery is depleted.”

NHTSA reports that there have been “two suspected injuries” related to the recall so far.

“The affected vehicles may have been built with high capacity batteries that may have failed internally,” the government agency noted.

Owners of recalled vehicles are encouraged to visit their Chrysler dealers to update their vehicle’s battery control module software. NHTSA says that dealers “can also inspect and, if necessary, replace the battery with high voltage.”

Affected drivers will be notified by email starting October 17, and are encouraged to call customer service at 800-853-1403. NHTSA recall numbers are 24V-720 and 24E-080 for Wranglers and Grand Cherokees, respectively.
