Jannik Sinner: The most daring of the Tour in 2024
The Italian has already locked down the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honours
October 14, 2024
In the countdown to the Nitto ATP Finals (10-17 November), our new series, ‘I went to Turin‘, will showcase the professional players and those in contention, and update fans on the fierce battle between the sport’s best players to lock down one of the eight spots at the end of the season.
Since lifting his first trophy at January’s Australian Open, no one has been able to loosen Jannik Sinner’s iron grip on the top spot in the 2024 PIF ATP Live Race To Turin.
With his career-best seventh Tour title on Sunday at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, the Italian extended his Live Race lead from runner-up Carlos Alcaraz to an unassailable 3,620 points. The 23-year-old Sinner’s tally of 10,330 points ensures that he will stay ahead of his rivals until the end of the year and thus earn the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honors for the first time.

Alcaraz, (6,710 points) and third-placed Alexander Zverev (6,215 points), who like Sinner have already booked their places at the season-ending Nitto ATP Finals, are the only players within 5000 points of the Italian. Daniil Medvedev is in fourth place with 4,820 points, but there are only 1,455 points separating US Open winner Taylor Fritz in fifth place and 12th Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Medvedev, Fritz and other chasers, including record Nitto ATP Finals champion Novak Djokovic, are all hoping to boost their chances of a title in Turin in a strong field rotation that runs through October and November. Djokovic will be looking in particular for the 1,000 points available to the winner of the Rolex Paris Masters, where he is a record seven-time champion.
So how did Sinner establish such a high position in Live Racing? The Italian has enjoyed a stellar 2024 so far, posting a 65-5 record and lifting a Tour-leading seven titles. After the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by the PIF honors in Shanghai, ATPTour.com takes a look at how Sinner, this year’s ‘dreaded leader’, took the PIF ATP Live to Turin race.
2024 SINNER’S STORY: LEADING AHEAD
After setting the record straight by winning her first maiden title at the Australian Open, Sinner has maintained that momentum in style throughout the 2024 season. The Italian, who won his first 16 tour-level matches of the year, had few problems staying on the front foot while managing his new status as ‘the man to beat’ on Tour.
POWER IN NUMBERS
It doesn’t take too much digging into the statistics behind the 2024 season to understand Sinner’s dominance. The Italian tops the list in four of the seven INSIGHTS categories, according to Tennis Data Innovations.

Sinner is a player who relishes stepping onto the court to tell crowds about his powerful swing, making his Tour-leading Conversion Score of 73.8% a key factor behind his stellar year. Conversion Score calculates the percentage of points scored when a player has been in the attacking position.
At the same time, Sinner’s consistency in terms of strength and quality from the back of the court was also unmatched. Coaches, competitors and spectators alike have noted the unique ‘pop’ the ball makes on the Sinner racquet, and the Italian leads the tour when it comes to Return Quality, Forehand Quality and Backhand Quality. Shot quality is calculated by analyzing speed, spin, depth, range and impact on the opponent.
3 GREAT WORKS
1) Great Mark in Melbourne: Sinner’s good second half of 2023 suggested he was ready to step up to the big stages of tennis, and he didn’t take long to fulfill that promise at January’s Australian Open. The Italian knocked out 10-year champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals before coming from straight sets to see off Daniil Medvedev in the final.

2) Jannik’s New York moment: After the embarrassment of missing the Paris Olympics due to illness, Sinner bounced back in style on the hard courts of the United States. He capped his Grand Slam year in September by claiming the title at the US Open, where he defeated home favorite Taylor Fritz in the final. Sinner became the first man in 47 years to claim his first Grand Slam crown in the same season.
3) Warriors of hard courts: Sinner registered a Tour-leading 45-3 record on hard courts in 2024. As well as lifting both of his Grand Slam titles, the Italian also lifted the ATP Masters 1000 trophies in March in Miami, where he dropped just one. set for six games, in August in Cincinnati, and in October in Shanghai.
A MILESTONE IS A MOMENT
If 2024 continues to be known as ‘the year of the sinner’, 10 June is undoubtedly the one day that will be most associated with the long-term legacy of Italians. After reaching the semifinals at Roland Garros last week, Sinner woke up that Monday as the first Italian No. 1 in the history of the PIF ATP Rankings. Sosoni has remained in the top spot ever since, and the 23-year-old has already wrapped up the ATP Year-End No. 1 presented by PIF honors for the first time.
