Jannik Sinner showed his resilience in a stunning victory on Sunday to advance to the fourth round of the Rolex Shanghai Masters.
World No. 1 passed the test by Tomas Martin Etchereverry, he won 6-7 (3), 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and 39 minutes. Moni will face Roberto Carballes Baena or Ben Shelton to secure his place in the quarter-finals.
Both players had chances to grab the opening set, but it was Etcheverry who held the nerve. Faced with two points, Argentina turned defense into attack with ease to get out of trouble and take the lead at halftime.
The 25-year-old won six of seven points in the first set, according to Infosys ATP Stats, backed by a backhand volley to deliver three points before changing in the first period.
Aiming to match his best run in Shanghai, Sinner found an extra gear at the start of the second set. Despite getting a break in the fifth and sixth games, the 23-year-old remained focused on taking the contest to one set apiece.
Etcheverry did well to weather the oncoming storm, saving three set points in the first game of the audir, but the added pressure from Sinner on her return eventually proved too much for the World No. 37 as he gave up playing in the third game.
From there, Sinner kept his foot on the gas to pull ahead at halftime and hit the ball from both wings to seal the win.
