Right now, comic fans are a little divided on whether or not the DC Universe (DCU) will be a success. Some think it will rival the original Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in popularity, but others worry it will repeat many (if not all) of the mistakes that plagued the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). However, some recent casting news gives us a lot of hope that this upcoming movie will be, at the very least, more accurate to the comics. Now that James Gunn has the bright Jason Momoa to play Lobo Supergirl: The Woman of Tomorrowsuccessfully fixed the DCEU’s biggest casting mistake.
Momoa Wasn’t the Right Aquaman
Momoa, to be honest, was always a weird part of the DCEU. For example, actors like Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot were always seen as good because their on-screen appearances mirrored (more or less) the comic portrayal of their characters. Aquaman, however, has always been a stubborn and domineering king in the comics, but the DCEU has turned him into a wacky party guy who just smashes beers and shouts bad one-liners. James Gunn is clearly looking for a more accurate comic cinematic space, and Jason Momoa is the perfect actor for Lobo because, frankly, his Lord of Atlantis has already gone too far as this no-nonsense hero.
However, just looking at the box office receipts, moviegoers seem to love Momoa’s performance as Aquaman (at least, initially). James Wan first Aquaman the film grossed over a billion dollars at the box office, making it the most successful film in the DCEU. However, Aquaman and the Lost Empire grossed $439.4 million in comparison, a huge drop that reflects everyone’s accumulated superhero fatigue and, perhaps, a collective disgust with Momoa’s one-note performance as the title character.
Lobo and Momoa Bandawonye
Why, then, are we so sure that James Gunn made the right decision to cast Jason Momoa as Lobo, especially when it is a reminder of the failure of the DCEU? As noted earlier, he has been testing this segment for many years now. The Aquaman we saw fighting alongside the Justice League or fighting to save Atlantis was not at all similar to the character from the comics because he appeared as a straight-to-video star with a “cool” tryhard dialogue that could have been written by. a five-year-old child. That kind of conversation is better suited to Lobo, a character known for his loud lines and bad attitude.
As James Gunn knows, Jason Momoa also has a great build for Lobo, a character whose torn body is always on display (that’s what happens when you wear a vest but skip the shirt). However, the attitude-laced performance of the character of Aquaman is more important than his body because this is a violent character, whose devil-may-care attitude is in stark contrast to Superman’s moralistic Boy Scout. We don’t know yet how Milly Alcock will play Supergirl, but it seems like she’ll have the perfect adversary (and, possibly, a suspenseful third act) if Momoa gives Lobo the rest of her DCEU.
Jason Momoa’s Dream Role
Finally, while this doesn’t guarantee a good performance, it’s nice to see James Gunn cast Jason Momoa as Lobo because the actor has spent years talking about wanting to play the role. Every great screenplay begins with an actor’s dedication to the project, and we know Momoa is determined to play the last of the Czarnians on screen. Combined with Gunn’s passion for the amazing universe he brings to life, the future looks incredibly bright for DC fans.
Before anyone picks up their trident to throw at us, we’ll finish by admitting that Momoa has always been a great player, but he’s been hampered by (sorry to break it to you, fans) a very limited vision. of directors like Zack Snyder and Joss Whedon. After the success of films like Guardians of the Galaxy and shows like The maker of peaceit’s clear that James Gunn is as passionate about comedy as Jason Momoa is about Lobo. And considering we’ve been waiting decades to see the Main Man on the live-action movie screen, we’re now more excited about the DCU than ever.
