Prime Minister Netanyahu’s office says it will consider US ‘ideas’, but Israel will make its own decision about attacking Iran.

Israel will consider the “ideas” of the United States but will ultimately act against Iran’s missile attacks “in its own national interests”, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said.

Iran launched about 200 missiles at Israel on October 1 in retaliation for an attack that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander Abbas Nilforoushan, as well as Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh earlier this year.

“We listen to the views of the United States, but we will make our final decisions based on our national interests,” Netanyahu’s office said on Tuesday.

This statement follows news reports, citing unnamed US officials, that Netanyahu told the White House that any attack would be limited to military sites, not nuclear or power facilities, suggesting a limited attack aimed at preventing all-out war.

The Wall Street Journal, citing anonymous US officials, said the confirmation was made in a phone call last week between Netanyahu and US President Joe Biden, and in talks between US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant.

The plan was “met with relief in Washington”, reported the Washington Post.

More than a year after the war broke out in Gaza, Israel has escalated its offensive in the besieged Palestinian territory, which has killed more than 42,000 people, while increasing its offensive in Lebanon.

Biden said he would not support an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities, which could further escalate and draw the US into conflict.

The Pentagon recently announced that the US is deploying its flagship anti-missile system, the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD), to Israel as the Biden administration continues to provide “ironclad” support for one of its top allies amid growing tensions with – Iran.

Israel has vowed to retaliate against Iran’s missile attack, with Gallant saying the response will be “deadly, precise and surprising”.

Oil markets have been on edge over the prospect of an Israeli strike against Iran’s oil fields, as such an attack could drive up global energy prices.

Gulf states have urged the US to stop Israel from attacking Iran’s oil fields because they are concerned that their oil fields could be burned by Tehran’s proxies if the conflict escalates.
