Despite his misgivings, Mason returns to the outer space with little knowledge of his assignment, only to discover that he has been specifically asked to defuse a terrorist hostage situation with the same group that killed his wife years ago.
Things get even more personal for Mason when he learns that one of the hostages, Karim, is his friend who was there the day his wife was killed. As Beirut it continues to reach its climax, the film perfectly balances international communication, terrorism, and American intervention, all in a film so tightly wound, you might have to pause and do some cardio in between to calm down.
