Instagram, Telegram and WhatsApp are back online after widespread ‘technical issues’.

Instagram, Facebook, Threads and Messenger are back online after widespread “technical issues” brought down major Meta apps for several hours on Wednesday. “We are 99% of the way there – doing final checks,” the company wrote update to X about four hours after first agreeing to leave.

The company did not elaborate on the root cause of the problem, or when the problems might be fully resolved. As of 4:30 PM PT Wednesday, Meta’s status dashboard still showed “significant disruption” to its business and transparency tools, although some services were marked as “resolved” or “recovering.” Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads and Messenger seem to have recovered a lot.

Earlier in the day, there were more than 90,000 problem reports for Facebook.com alone on Downdetector, as users across X and Bluesky reported problems loading and running Meta apps. For a while even the Meta company website was displaying the text “This page is currently unavailable.” When Engadget first reached out to Meta for comment, the company pointed to a brief statement by X acknowledging that “a technical issue is affecting some users’ ability to access our apps.”

Meta last faced a major issue in March 2024 that blocked users from accessing its apps and services for two hours. That outage was attributed to a “technical issue” by Meta communications director Andy Stone, which is the same explanation Meta has given us so far.

Update, December 11, 2024, 4:50PM ET: Added more details on outage length and impact to Meta business tools.

Update, December 11, 2024, 7:50 PM ET: Additional comments from Meta about the blackout situation have been added.
