I have been sleeping on a Purple Mattress for 5 years. Here’s What You Should Know Before Trying One For Yourself.

After five years of sleeping on the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 mattress, I had to replace it with another bed. As my time with the mattress comes to an end, I’m here to share my thoughts on this mattress and offer some things to consider when looking at your own mattress.
One thing I liked about this mattress is its unique feel. All Purple mattresses have a Purple GelFlex Grid that helps reduce pressure. This proprietary cushioning technology gives this bed a comfortable feel like no other.
Before I get into the nitty-gritty, it’s important to note that the Purple bed I slept on for five years is no longer available. Purple has updated its entire lineup, but talking about my sleeping experience with this particular mattress is still important because other new Purple beds have a similar feel.

The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 was one of Purple’s top quality mattresses.
First impressions
Whenever anyone tries a Purple mattress for the first time, they have a strong reaction, one way or another. Some people just fall in love with the feeling while others think it’s very strange — mainly because the Purple Hybrid Premier mattress (or any Purple bed for that matter) is almost unlike any bed you’ve tried in the past thanks to the Purple GelFlex. The grid.
When I first tried the Purple Hybrid Premier mattress, I thought, “This is so comfortable. I’ve never tried anything more comfortable before, and I want to sleep on this thing.” Five years later, you get used to the feeling, and the Purple bed feels like a responsive, comfortable mattress.
The durability and feel of the Purple Hybrid Premier 3
Feel
The first thing we start with when discussing Purple beds is the proprietary comfort layer called the Purple GelFlex Grid.
Over the years I’ve slept in this bed, its name has changed several times, but things don’t change. This stretchy, squishy, responsive material is almost identical to Dr. Scholl. Purple’s bread and butter also has a unique feel that may take some getting used to when you first lay in bed.

Strength
The Purple Hybrid Premier 3 came in only one durability option. When my team and I tested it, we found it to be close to medium, which works well for me because I’m a side and back sleeper. However, Purple recently revamped its mattress collection to offer more options.
Now, when looking for a new Purple Restore mattress, you can choose between soft or firm.
Who is the best Prime Purple Hybrid?
A place to sleep
I usually sleep on my side, but I often wake up on my back or side. Rotating between sleeping positions on the Purple mattress feels easy, which helps me have fewer distractions at night. The Premier Purple Hybrid accommodated both of my sleeping areas due to its medium hardness.
Body type
I’m on the heavier side, which means I felt the Purple Hybrid Premier 3 was softer than medium. This worked well for me because I’m primarily a side sleeper, and side sleepers often prefer soft beds. My sleeping partner, on the other hand, is more of a stomach sleeper, and even though they’re lighter than me, they’ve had less back pain over time and would be better served by a firmer mattress (say now). This just goes to show how subjective intensity can be.

Classification of motion
The responsive nature of the Purple mattress is something I’ve always enjoyed because I’m a side sleeper and compact. That said, it’s not my favorite sleeping partner because the tossing and turning sometimes wakes them up in the middle of the night. However, I wouldn’t say that’s because of the mattress’s inability to isolate motion. Reactions are just something you have to deal with if you are someone who tosses and turns a lot at night. If this is the case and your partner is a light sleeper, a memory foam bed that prevents you from tossing and turning may be a better proposition.

Temperature
Purple likes to talk about how well these beds regulate temperature on their website. There are no Purple beds that our testing team would classify as “active cooling,” but thanks to that GelFlex Grid material, Purple beds are temperature neutral.
I’ve been sleeping with this stuff for a few hot summers and have had no heat issues. I’ll still need to crank up the AC in my room when it’s really hot in July and August, but the bed did a solid job of controlling the temperature. I think that will be something you will appreciate about the Purple Bed if you decide to get one for yourself.
Strength
Purple also likes to tout the firmness of its mattresses, and I agree with this to an extent.
GelFlex material will last a long time. Unlike some foams, I don’t see things degrading over time. Another bed had the same components you would find in many other mattresses, such as coils and foam, and those will degrade over time. However, I didn’t notice it in the five years I slept on this mattress. The warranty is 10 years, so I didn’t expect to see any durability issues after only five years. At least until the 10 year mark, I think the GelFlex Grid material will hold up well.
Final thoughts
I don’t have any major complaints about the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I slept well for a long time, and we switch a lot because my partner wants to try something else. Finding a mattress that satisfies two different types of sleepers is a challenge, and it can take a lot of trial and error to find one that works for both people.
I haven’t had chronic back pain in the entire five years I’ve slept on the Purple Hybrid Premier 3. I’m not one for aches and pains, but it’s worth noting that I’m in my back- I’m comfortable even though I’m in my 30s. I think that has less to do with the mattress itself and more to do with the fact that its firmness level works well for me and my sleeping preferences.
My body got used to the unique feeling of the Purple bed in no time. Most mattress brands offer at least a 100-night trial period, which Purple offers. I recommend using that trial period to try the Purple mattress and see if it’s right for you.
My partner and I are running out of time, but we’re excited about the new Purple mattress system. Our CNET sleep experts have carefully tested and reviewed Purple’s new lineup, so be sure to check out those reviews and videos if you’re interested in one of its new beds.
