URICO HOEY of the Philippines battled back with a two-over 72 in the fourth round to finish tied for 59th.th at the Sony Open in Hawaii on Sunday.
The bid of Mr. Hoey’s final charge became stronger as he hit three bogeys on the first seven holes at Honolulu’s windy Waialae Country Club.
The Pinoy ace continued to shoot birdies on No. 9 and 18 between the fourth bogey on No. 15 to post a round of 37-35 that sent him 30 spots into the final PGA Tour season opener.
Mr. Hoey, who was in contention and ran 11th after a strong 64 eagle in the second round before fading in the final, he combined for a total of 275 – 11 strokes behind eventual winner Nick Taylor of Canada and runner-up Nico Echavarria of Colombia.
Fil-Am, 29, earned $19,314.
Currently, Mr. Taylor birdied the second tee hole to hit it Mr. Echavarria for his fifth career PGA Tour title and a top prize of $1,566,000. Mr. Echavarria deposited $948,300 in the bank. – Olmin Leyba
