Mississippi trail ride shooting leaves 3 dead, 8 injured: sheriff

Three people were killed and eight others were injured in a shooting incident in Holmes County, Mississippi, during a homecoming football celebration just hours after the game ended.

The Holmes County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting on Highway 17 around 12:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Sheriff Willie March told WLBT.

Mashi said the shooting happened when a group of young people decided to have a party on a three or four hour drive after the Holmes County Consolidated School home game on Friday night.

A group of people in the crowd started fighting, pulled out guns and opened fire, authorities said.

The three people who died were identified as Martel Gibson, 25, Shundra Chestnut, 19, and John Jenkins, 19.

Eight other victims were injured and taken to hospitals.

About 200 to 300 people were on the road celebrating when the gunfire dispersed them, a police chief told the Associated Press.

“It’s been a mess, to tell you the truth,” March said. “The shooting just started and people started running.”

The incident is still under investigation.
