Heavy rain expected in Tamil Nadu and Kerala; Strong winds will continue across North India: IMD Scientist Soma Sen
The recent conditions due to deep circulation in the Gulf of Mannar area may cause heavy rains over Kerala and the southern state of Tamil Nadu said IMD scientist Soma Sen Roy on Friday. “Yesterday, 11cm of rain was recorded in Tamil Nadu, 6-7 cm in Kerala and 9 cm in coastal Karnataka. Heavy to heavy rain (12-20 cm) is expected in central Kerala and south Tamil Nadu because of the deep distribution in the Gulf of Mannar area…” he said.
He further added that “Over the country, the weather will remain clear. Strong winds will continue in north India for the next 2-3 days. No change in temperature is expected in north India till November 3. After Nov 3, Temperatures are likely to drop by 2-3 degrees Celsius due to northwesterly winds…”
According to the IMD, heavy rain is likely to occur in Kerala and Mahe and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal on Friday.
According to the regional office of the weather forecasting agency, there may be flooding in places, where traffic is disrupted and minor damage to some loose structures.
The IMD has issued advice to stay indoors and avoid any movement if possible, ensure that children and animals are inside and remove any loose logs or debris that could cause a hazard.
If you are outside, then it is advised to stay away from metal buildings and electrical equipment and stay away from all utility lines, including telephone and power lines, metal fences, trees etc.
People are also advised to stay away from any other electrical conductors and windows, and doors, and avoid using corded telephones and other similar electrical devices that could be struck by lightning.
IMD has also issued weather warnings for the next 7 days saying “Heavy to very heavy rain likely over Tamil Nadu and Kerala and Mahe on November 1 and gradually decreasing thereafter. Gradual decrease in minimum and maximum temperature over North and East of India on 2-3 November 3-7.”
