Floyd Schofield Jr. He will move up in class in his next fight as he tries to move into the lightweight division.
The unbeaten 22-year-old will face Mexico’s Rene Tellez Giron in the main event of the November 2 episode of DAZN. The location was not disclosed although The Ring has learned that it will be coming to Virgin Hotels Las Vegas.
Schofield (17-0, 12 knockouts) will fight for just the second time in 2024, albeit at the mercy of others. ‘Kid Austin’ was scheduled to face H20 Sylve in the July 29 Mike Tyson-Jake Paul Netflix event at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. However, the show was delayed until November 15 due to Tyson being hospitalized earlier this summer.
Sylve’s team chose another opponent on the day of the DAZN Pay-Per-View event in Tampa, Florida. It backfired badly, as Lucas Bahdi (17-0, 15 KOs) presented a top contender for the 2024 Knockout of the Year.
Because Sylve is promoted by Most Valuable Promotions, only his spot could be secured at the new date. So Schofield and Golden Boy Promotions stepped up efforts to further the career of the Austin, Texas-based lightweight.
Giron (20-3, 13 KOs) is a proven spoiler with a reliable chin.
The 25-year-old from Queretaro, Mexico has won three straight since losing a heartbreaking decision to Jose Matias Romero last June in Argentina. Among the current run was an eight-decision, unanimous decision over George Acosta at the Michelob ULTRA Arena in Las Vegas. Giron also suffered the first loss of his career to rookie Karlos Balderas.
Balderas’ victory came six months after Giron dropped an eight-round decision to Michel Rivera in June 2019. Both boxers were then undefeated. His other defeat was on Jan. 2022 against the then undefeated Giovani Cabrera.
Schofield last fought on March 16 with a fifth round submission loss to Esteuri Suero at the same venue. That fight was supposed to show superiority in the tournament, but Suero refused to fight within the rules during their brief courtship.
The opportunity would represent Schofield’s third title since signing a promotional deal with Golden Boy in 2022. He headlined a show last July in San Antonio that hosted the canceled Eimantas Stanionis-Vergil Ortiz WBA title fight three times.
The Ring has learned that super middleweight contender Bektemir ‘Bek The Bully’ Melikuziev (14-1, 10 KOs) will appear on the show. Plans call for the 2016 silver medalist to earn a shot at the WBA title, depending on the opponent secured.
