DAVID MARCUS: In Scranton, even Kamala’s paid union supporters see the writing on the wall

SCRANTON, Pa. – Joel was on the ground from Boston with a few disreputable friends and fellow members of the National Association of Public Employees sent by the Kamala Harris campaign to drum up support in Pennsylvania.

They also know that things are not going well for him.

“I don’t know why he can’t answer questions,” Joel told me, in what was about the most candid test against human interest I’d heard in months.

I think many people on all sides are confused about this.

As a Philly born and raised guy who spent two decades in New York, I felt it was my duty to explain, in a good-natured way, to the guys why I hate Boston. After all, it is a treasured tradition of the Northeast. From that, Stanley, who seemed to be the leader of this group, found another explanation for Kamala’s plight.

“He’s only been in the race for three months, he’s not out of the gate yet. We have a lot to ask.”

Billionaire Mark Cuban echoed that in X’s post, “Think of it this way,” thinking, “a candidate who started 13 weeks ago, now, the worst situation, in a dead heat with the former president.”

Despite the negative thinking of the worst case scenario, what we see in Mr. Cuban is the beginning of the excuse for Harris’ loss. But as playwright David Mamet once wrote, “your excuses are your own.”

I was thinking about all of this on Friday as I wandered around Scranton under the beautiful sky and among the oldest monuments to America’s greatness. One time, with my hand on God, I’m not doing this, I found myself on Biden Street.

Biden street. That’s Biden.

I bring this up because there were sirens and lights flashing when the police closed the traffic. “Drivers are fed up,” I heard another police officer say, “maybe they’ll remember it was a Democrat who did this on Election Day.”

A young man comes up to me and says, “why are they blocking the traffic?”

“Tim Walz is in town,” I explained.

“Walsh time?” he asked.

“No, Tim Walz.”

“WHO?”

I took a deep breath, and said, “It doesn’t matter.”

And I was impressed, that the Democrats passed on the guy who has a street named after him in Scranton for Kamala Harris and the dirty sitcom dad that no one knows.

Joel and Stanley are good friends, tough guys who love the country and disagree with me about who is best to serve it. Even if they are Patriots fans. There is nothing wrong with them organizing as workers and fighting for the future they want. That’s America.

But I never left convinced that Harris was exactly who they were looking for.

“I didn’t like the way it happened,” Joel said, regarding Joe Biden’s expulsion from the race. And he meant it. I always say that polls don’t have faces, people do, and I could see it in his eyes.

When I asked Stanley why he supported Harris, not why he didn’t support Trump, but why Harris, he said, “Why can’t I say why I don’t want Trump?”

And he could, and he did, but I think he also knew it was an escape.

The biggest misconception about American politics is that it’s all an algebraic equation, even if the polls are repeatedly wrong. It’s not the numbers, it’s the story, and Kamala Harris is telling no more than her rise to middle school.

“I don’t know why he can’t answer questions,” Joel said, and yes, he had a point.

Harris still has a chance to become president of the United States, but before that happens he must answer one simple question: “Why you?”
