Ennis Vs. Ortiz Jr.’s Oral Agreement. We reached the Battle of February 22nd
It has been reported that Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Vergil Ortiz Jr. they agreed to a February 22 fight in Riyadh for Vergil’s interim WBC title. It’s still not official, but the two have verbally agreed.
Ennis will have to bulk up a bit to have a chance against the heavy weapons that Vergil will be blasting at him. Boxing Scene’s Lance Pugmire reports that Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) and Ortiz Jr (22-0, 21 KOs) have agreed.
You have to give Boot credit for having the courage to take on this fight because Vergil Jr. cut above, and everything is wrong on paper.
Interestingly, Boots and Ortiz Jr. agreed to fight at 154 because Ennis’ promoter, Eddie Hearnhe had said in an interview on Tuesday that the war could be in 147. Ennis needs every chance she can get to win after how she looked in her last fight against Karen Chukhadzhian on November 9.
There are no words to describe how bad Bhuti was in that fight. Karen, who never misses her punches, beat him with everything but a kitchen sink and made him laugh in front of Bots fans at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
That will work in favor of Ennis because Vergil Jr. he had moved up to the welterweight division two years ago in 2022 and would risk his life trying to make a comeback. At 154, you have to make Vergil the favorite because Boots looked awful in his last two fights against Karen and David Avanesyan.
It’s a tough fight for Boots to take his first try at 154, but he has to do something. He’s not getting the fights he wants at 147 against any other champion, and his future is limited if he stays. Going up to 154 could help Ennis, as long as he doesn’t get too far away from his confrontation with Vergil.
If Ennis loses this fight to Ortiz Jr, it will be interesting to see Hearn’s reaction. Watching Boot Boots’ ship capsize at Vergil on February 22nd will put Hearn in a dilemma where he will have to decide whether to undertake the costly task of rebuilding Joshua’s brand or wash his hands of him, seeing him as a mistake.
When Hearn signed Ennis in April 2024, he looked innocent 24k goldthe type of fighter who can continue to grow for years. But after watching Ennis struggle in his two fights under his tutelage against Avanesyan and Chukhadzhian, Hearn quickly learned he was wrong. Ennis is fool’s gold, and Hearn clearly blew it.
