Elon Musk’s ‘top 20’ Diablo IV claim is as real as his self-driving cars

Elon Musk is a busy man right now. He is said to be using X, SpaceX, Tesla, and Neuralink, while actively campaigning for Trump. But despite those many worries, Musk still finds time to play Diablo 4. He even said he’s very good at it, saying in a recent interview with Joe Rogan that he’s in the top 20. Diablo 4 the players an act that apparently only two Americans would want. If this sounds like unearned pride from the same guy who said his Cybertrucks are bulletproof… it is.

The Pit is a permanent place Diablo 4. Players are given 15 minutes to eliminate monsters and the final boss, with each death shaving an increasing amount of time off the overall score. Players who can complete The Pit get endgame items that are used to upgrade their gear, and since this is the last pit, the fight is very difficult. Therefore, clearing the hole as soon as possible is a decent indicator that you can Diablo very good.

In fact, there are board-level players in their time to finish the Pit which is the basis of Musk’s claim. If you check the Pit leaderboard on hellltides.com, sure enough, at press time, Elon Musk is sitting at number 20.

There are no official leaderboards for The Pit. Helltides.com is not affiliated with Activision Blizzard. These rankings are based on screen recorded runs submitted by the players themselves. And the number of submissions used to create this list? 881.

To do well for Musk, clearing the Pit in 2 minutes and 45 seconds is not unreasonable. It shows that he knows what he’s doing (or that he at least knows how to look for the best builds in his class on sites like IcyVeins.com.) But it’s distracting the hell out of believing he’s in the top 20. Diablo 4 the players in the world based on a list made up of only 881 people. Steam’s concurrent player count shows the game sitting at 11,000 players.

In interview no The VergeFayz, owner of helltides.com, agrees with Musk’s self-proclaimed “top 20” Diablo 4 player. “The best world list we have,” Fayz said on Discord. “Elon’s claim is valid.” But Fayz recognizes the limitations of the leaderboard.

“It’s as wide as it gets in terms of recorded Pit runs with video evidence, as our community always alerts us when new top runs are recorded and posted on social media,” Fayz wrote. “But, there’s no way for us to know about Pit runs that can’t be recorded and shared.”

Musk is one of those billionaires who have made lofty but unverifiable claims about their gaming prowess. In a Pubity TikTok video, Mark Zuckerberg recently boasted that he’s “closer to grandma status” Civilization and that it would surprise him if there was someone in the world who could beat him. In 2017, the New York Times reported that Travis Kalanick, the former CEO of Uber, “once held the second position in the world of Nintendo Wii Tennis video game.” (This led to an interesting depth from Ars Technicawhich concluded that Kalanick was wrong.) Musk could legitimately claim special ability Diablo 4 he left it like that. But, as often happens with billionaires, his personality got in the way, leading him to make statements that are not based on fact.
