Eglu Pro Chicken Coop Review: The Better Box

When we introduced our herd to Eglu Pro, the Phoenix area was experiencing chronic heat, setting a new record of 117 degrees Fahrenheit in late September. In that kind of heat, any kind of cage will be nice, so we have practiced well to ensure that the girls have water to touch and shade to hide.

While the Eglu Pro cage incorporates double-wall insulation, uses UV-resistant polyethylene, and was designed to allow cross-flow of air, we wanted to further reduce heat-related discomfort. What I liked about the design of the cage was that it gave us the option to remove the back panel from the sleeping area to allow more air flow to keep the girls as cool as possible.

Hot air was better than blowing wind, we thought.

In rural areas, with very active predators, this may not be acceptable. We live in coyotes’ home country, after all. But our coop is located inside a fenced garden area, kept securely separated from our pack of three green heels and one border collie. It is clear, however, that the Eglu Pro was designed with security in mind.

If you’re the type to close your coop at night, a single swing panel serves as a door at the top of the ladder. And the access door to the drawer has a push-and-turn function on its knob, which provides extra security. A fogged panel lets daylight in in the morning, and the app-based, smart door feature lets you control security and set a wake-up call. These smart features are an improvement on the basic set we got.

Taking it Easy

Backyard chickens, like any bird, do damage. But we found that cleaning up that mess is surprisingly easy with the Eglu Pro design. The sliding panels under the nesting and roost boxes are very easy to remove, spray, and slide back in. It takes minutes.

Cleaning our old barn, made of wood and metal, was a chore that no one wanted to do. And using a pipe was out of the question. Also, our current owner hen likes to hang out on the roof of the coop at night, so we love that we can easily spray any evidence of her moonlighting.
