Edited video does not show Indonesia’s VP-elect ‘stepping down’
This video was also shared on Facebook, YouTube and TikTok with the same false claim a few weeks before the scheduled inauguration of Gibran and president-elect Prabowo Subianto on October 20 in the capital Jakarta (link saved).
Local media reported in September that Gibran allegedly sent messages criticizing Prabowo between 2014 and 2019 under a pseudonym (link saved).
These reports emerged when Jokowi was preparing to leave office after ten years in power. He has faced criticism for allegedly trying to build his own political dynasty and maintain influence after his brother-in-law and former justice official changed the eligibility rules, allowing Gibran to run for vice president (link saved).
Some people seemed to believe the claim in the fake post, with one user replying: “It’s good that he stepped down, he should know his place.”
However, the video has been edited and since October 9, there have been no official reports that Gibran has announced that he will step down from the position of vice president.
Incorrectly distorted images
A reverse image search found that a clip of the distributed post was edited on images published on July 17, 2024 when Gibran resigned as Mayor of Solo, also known as Surakarta, a center in Central Java Province.
Local media Tribun Medan TV published an actual photo of the event on July 17 alongside the headline “It’s official! Gibran resigns as Solo Mayor” (archived link).
“Gibran Rakabuming Raka officially resigned as the Mayor of Surakarta at the Majority Meeting of the Legislative Councils of the Surakarta District, on 17 July 2024,” the video caption reads.
His mayoral term was supposed to last until 2026 (link saved).

A longer version of the video was published by another Indonesian news outlet, Kompas TV, on its YouTube channel (archived link).
Gibran’s reference to his role as mayor was cut from images on fake news sites.
“The undersigned, name, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, position, mayor of Surakarta, hereby resigns as mayor of Surakarta for 2021-2026, following his appointment as vice president elected in the 2024 national elections,” Gibran said in Kompas. TV video.
