Edgar Wright’s The Running Man Adds Michael Cera to Cast

All year round, what’s next for Paramount Running Man resume to Edgar Wright has been picking stars. It first starred Glen Powell and Katy O’Brian as the leads, then expanded to include Josh Brolin and Lee Pace as the main villains. Now you can add other supporting cast members, including Wright’s old loose friend.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Michael Cera (Scott Pilgrim) and Emilia Jones (Lock & Key) are joining the cast of the upcoming film. Cera’s said to play an unnamed “naïve rebel” who tries her best to help Powell’s Ben Richards, while Jones will play a down-on-his-luck woman who is said to be “blind to government oppression” against whom Richards fights. Filming will take place in London in early 2025 before its release later in the year.

Based on Stephen King’s 1982 sci-fi novel, Running Man is set in a dystopian 2025 where a totalitarian regime has ruled over America and uses a violent game show to keep the citizens happy. The hit show sees ruthless killers hunt contestants, and Richards signs up to raise money for his sick daughter. Contestants earn more money the longer they live, and as long as he lives, he also attracts the attention of the show’s producers and killers, who would prefer him to lose.

Running Man it was previously adapted into a 1987 film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger by Paul Michael Glaser, and back in June, Powell teased what would make this new version different from its predecessor. He said Wright’s film is “heavily based” on King’s book, making Richards’ hunt global rather than just US. We’ll find out how the two films differ from Wright’s Running Man will be available in theaters on November 21, 2025.
