Heat legend Dwyane Wade spoke candidly about the response to his statue unveiled over the weekend.
There were thousands of memes created and posted on social media after the reveal because the face looked so unlike D-Wade’s, so naturally, the internet had a field day.
A day later, Wade defended the image, while admitting that the resemblance is not real.
“If I wanted it to look like me, I would just stand outside the stadium and you could take pictures,” Wade said on Monday. “It doesn’t have to look like me. It’s a temporary version of art that happens when we try to strengthen us.”
As for the online retreat, he takes it all in his stride.
“I care, but I don’t care,” said Wade. “Social media is about ideas. Everyone has an opinion. Everyone, use your ideas. Please talk more about us. Talk more about the statue, come down and see it, take pictures, send memes. We don’t care.”
Later on Monday during the break of the Heat v Pistons game, Wade again defended the work of the local singer when he spoke to the crowd.
“There are few organizations that have an image outside. There are not even 15 players who played this game of basketball who have an image outside. We – we – have an image out there,” Wade told the crowd. “So to be a vessel, to be chosen, I’m proud of it. I’m proud because we’ve worked very, very, very hard to create an image that will last for a long time that shows that the Miami Heat, a family What my and our fan base is all about.
“Therefore, don’t let anyone talk about our home. Because this is our house. They are outside. Leave them there.”
