Draymond Green shared a tense moment on the court with teammate Buddy Hield in the Warriors’ win over the Suns on Saturday night and he has explained himself.
Green was not happy with Hield after a Warriors turnover and a broadcast microphone apparently caught him saying to Buddy, “Wake the if–k up. Or go sit down and f–k. S–t.”
After the game, Green said he was trying to be a leader to Buddy as he learned to play with him.
“As a leader, you must try different methods. “Sometimes you go to the guy, sometimes you don’t,” Green told reporters. “I have played with Buddy now for 30 games. To try to learn what makes him tick, you have to try different methods. Jonathan Kuminga, I go to him, and I say, ‘Hey, this is what I need you to do. Look over there.’ He will go and do it. If I scold him, I don’t think he will do it. He [won’t] listen.
“Stephen [Curry]I went to him and scolded him. He responds to both. As a leader, that’s one thing I learned from it [Michigan State coach Tom Izzo] in terms of leadership, you have to lead the guys who make up the team. But leading someone doesn’t look like leading the next guy. And you have to find out what makes guys tick. What made that boy go. So, I still get that. Going to Buddy the way I did, we needed you at that time. We were flat, we just turned the ball over. Lock it. Not that for Buddy. Dennis [Schrӧder] I was there the other day. He’s been here for two weeks and he was with me the other day. Well, it is.
“Mics capture everything today. I don’t care. I will say it on the microphone. I can’t see anything.”
Green says moments like this happen all the time and Hield won’t take it personally.
“…Don’t be a guy who can’t be scolded, and I will never be that guy. My partner scolded me? Good. I might answer something. Well, guess what? Buddy gave me something back. We are not dictators. It’s just what you say it doesn’t go away and everyone should listen. He said something back to me, I said something back, he said something back, I said something back.
“We moved forward and that’s how it should be. It won’t always be peaches and cream. Who you think are idiots. We lost three times in a row. We have an advantage in an important part of the game where we need to get a good shot. Let’s take that.”
The four-time champion went on to explain how the experience can greatly benefit others like Hield.
“I’ve played a lot of tournament basketball, a lot of meaningful basketball. “Buddy hasn’t had a chance to play a lot of meaningful basketball in this league,” Green said. Guess what? It’s our job to make sure you understand what that means.
“If people don’t like it, so be it. That’s why they don’t have four titles and I do.”
