Devin Haney revealed today that he will “return” to the game in March after an 11-month layoff. Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) hasn’t said who he will fight, but it won’t be Ryan Garcia. His suspension expires in April.
Whoever Haney picks will have his chin checked. They will try to follow Garcia’s plan, hoping to repeat his success and avoid being sued.
March is coming back
Fans want to see Haney either fight Garcia or one of the top 140 fighters, such as Alberto Puello, Teofimo Lopez, Sandor Martin, and Rolly Romero. Devin is unlikely to fight any of these guys because he has been out of the ring for a long time, and needs to tune up. He has to do that, but it’s hard to predict what his father, Bill Haney, will want to do.
With Haney coming off a three-fight losing streak against Kingry, he needs to take it easy by fighting a weaker boxer before facing a stronger one.
Haney wasted nearly a year of his career after losing a 12-round majority decision to Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) on April 20 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Devin sued Ryan afterwards to get tested for the PED Ostarine. The case is still out.
It will be interesting to see who Haney chooses because if he is just an average fighter, he won’t get a big payday unless Turki Al-Shiekh chooses to put him on one of his cards. There are plenty of decent opponents for Devin to fight at 140 and 135, which would be good for him.
Haney has been looking thin in training photos, suggesting he might consider dropping down to 135 to make life easier. He has no worries about fighting at lightweight rather than light welterweight or 147.
For the song to be sung, George Kambosos Jr. would be great if Devin hadn’t already won the ‘Little Emperor’ twice. He wouldn’t be a threat on his chin and fire 12 rounds at him in one direction.
