De La Hoya Questions Hearn’s Commitment To Ennis Vs. Ortiz Jr
Oscar De La Hoya says he hopes promoter Eddie Hearn will keep his word that the fight between Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis and Vergil Ortiz Jr. followed at 154 for Vergil to win the WBC interim junior middleweight title.
Hearn had said he wanted a fight between Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) and Ortiz (22-0, 21 KOs), but after the way Boot performed in her rematch with IBF welterweight champion Karen Chukhadzhian on November 9 , he may have second thoughts.
Hearn Gone Quiet
British promoter Hearn has been tight-lipped about making the Ortiz Jr-Boots fight after Ennis’ poor performance against Chukhadzhian at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.
“I still stand by what Eddie Hearn said, I hope he will keep his word that Vergil Ortiz vs. Jaron Ennis will follow at 154 pounds,” said Oscar De La Hoya speaking to Boxing King Media about his hope that Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn will succeed. made a fight between Boot Ennis and WBC junior middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. next as he had said before.
Chukhadzhian schooled boots every step of the way, taking countless clean pictures of the head in every cycle. Ennis won thanks to the fifth strike when Chukhadzhian went to his knees to escape pressure and a point loss in the tenth round.
If Chukhadzhian had been less busy, Ennis would have lost the first time. The damage was still done to Boot’s work. Karen officially exposed him, and Hearn came to deeply regret signing Ennis in the first place.
Ennis won the fight with scores of 119-107, 117-109 and 116-111. However, it was such a poor performance that it showed that Ennis had no hope of moving up to 154 to face talented competitors and world champions in that division.
Hearn hasn’t said much recently about making a fight between Ennis and Vergil. The only thing you can imagine is that he doesn’t trust Ennis to win, and wants to keep him under lock and key, well protected from Ortiz Jr. ruining his unbeaten record.
Boots Can’t Afford Losing Vergil Jr.
It’s from Hearn’s point of view that you might be seeing it. If Vergil Ortiz beats Ennis, all the time, money, and effort Hearn has poured into making him a star will be wasted. Hearn would be left with a battered Ennis, in need of an expensive rebuilding job, and without the enthusiasm or popularity to undertake such a monumental task.
Hearn will be stuck with a useless fighter, Boots, who lacks charisma. He would have no choice but to do it eat the remainder of his contract or let him go if he has a skipping class.
