In The Phantom Menace, X-Men veteran Ray Park brought Darth Maul to life, and his mysterious villain quickly became the star of the entire Prequel Trilogy. However, as hardcore fans know, Park is not the best actor to bring this Sith hero to life. That honor goes to Sam Witwer, the voice actor of Darth Maul, in the video below, explaining why he loved his character’s death at the hands of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Rebels.
Sam Witwer and the Death of Darth Maul
If you don’t have Sam Witwer’s almost encyclopedic knowledge of Star Wars, you might need a quick refresher… The Clone Wars The cartoon confirmed that Darth Maul had cheated death, and the actor continued to torment our heroes Rebels a spinoff. In one episode of Rebelswe get a rematch between Maul and a much older Obi-Wan Kenobi, but the battle ends quickly when Qui-Gon Jinn’s former apprentice kills the Sith once and for all. Many fans complained that the fight was short and ultimately disappointing, but in this video from the fan meeting, Witwer explained why the fight was so perfect.
According to Sam Witwer, the death of Darth Maul came from the fact that Obi-Wan Kenobi accepted the maturity of years and lured the Sith warrior into a trap. The voice actor revealed that if you look closely at Kenobi’s movements, he is moving the lightsaber in different directions, effectively going from young Obi-Wan to old Obi-Wan. Witwer sees this bike as the old man’s way of realizing that he has changed as a hero and Jedi Master, which is why he stopped holding his lightsaber like Ewan McGregor to hold it like Alec Guinness.
The last lightsaber form a Jedi takes is that of his master, Qui-Gon Jinn. As Sam Witwer notes, Darth Maul caused the death of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s old master, and when Kenobi assumed normal form, the Sith went to do the job again. In short, he thinks Obi-Wan is copying what Qui-Gon did back then The Phantom Menace and tries to respond accordingly.
However, Kenobi has been pondering what killed his old master for almost twenty years, and is resisting Maul’s moves well. It was his cunning that made this a short battle, as Maul got so close that his opponent was able to reverse the killing move almost immediately. Despite Kenobi’s manipulations and moves, however, Sam Witwer believes that Darth Maul’s death was caused by him underestimating his enemy.
In the player’s words, the Sith sees his enemy as a “hopeless man hiding in the desert,” a “coward” and a “failed Jedi.” Wtwer says that only in his defeat did Maul realize that “this is a busy Jedi Master, and if he is right, this must be the most important patrol in the galaxy.” He closes the clock that Kenobi protects the Chosen One, and because of his hatred for Palpatine, he has an interesting idea about this famous prophecy of the Jedi: “he will avenge us.”
Aside from Ray Park and George Lucas, few people have as much insight as Sam Witwer when it comes to the life and death of Darth Maul. His interesting take on the character’s final duel may not be enough to appease fans who think the battle is too short, but it certainly gave us a new way to look at one of our favorite Star Wars scenes. Among Witwer’s names and the highest quality of Ahsokaone thing is clear: there’s never been a better time to revisit Rebels and experience the best a galaxy far, far away has to offer.
