Trainer Greg Hackett says Terence Crawford’s victory over Canelo Alvarez in 2025 will make him the best fighter in the last 30 years.
For Crawford to be seen as the best fighter in the last 30 years for beating Canelo at his best, would be to ignore the many strong fighters who have done much more than him.
We already know how Crawford will choose to fight Canelo using i Mayweather’s blueprint of hitting and running. He will NOT stand in front of Canelo and trade.
Terence will play it safe and make the fight boring the whole time. Fans will feel angry for wasting their money by ordering the fight on PPV.
Hackett already views Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) as the #1 pound-for-pound contender for world titles in four divisions and unquestioned in two weight divisions. It’s hard to agree with Hackett because Crawford’s wins in those four categories didn’t represent anyone special.
If you’ve seen Canelo’s last two fights against Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia, you’ll know he’s well over 34 years old. He is showing age in his 19th year as a professional. The first two fights against Gennadiy Golovkin took a lot out of Canelo, and he hasn’t looked the same since.
Estimating Crawford’s Legacy
Crawford is right the other is Adrien Broner with that. Broner also captured world titles in four weight classes, but his resume was as weak as Bud’s. It shows how much the division has watered down the four title fights that fighters can pick and choose from to capture the belts with the help of their smart promoters.

You’d have to be naive to think those wins are good enough to make Crawford #1 p-4-p or the best fighter of the last 30 years. Based on those wins, I can only say that his promoters matched him carefully with Crawford.
There were NOT enough fights to give Crawford credit for beating them because most of them were going downhill when he fought them. Madrimov was the only one not shot, and came close to defeating Crawford in his 12th fight.
If Crawford had beaten the 34-year-old Canelo, it wouldn’t have made him the best fighter of the past 30 years because he wouldn’t have matched the former six-division world champion’s style of winning. Oscar De La Hoya or the champion of the eight divisions Manny Pacquiao they do during their work. Those two are the best.
You can’t put Crawford in because he fought a weak team, and the same goes for Floyd Mayweather Jr. ‘Money May’ was very picky about the opposition he fought and spent a lot of time cherry picking to save O. His precious Floyd is the catalyst of the selectors of this generation. He was a teacher.
“The tank is a beast, but I think it’s pound for pound, Bud [Crawford] is #1. Many times, people doubted him. They doubted him against him [Errol] Spence. They doubted him against him [Israil] Madrimov. Some people say he was too young. I’ve heard them,” Greg Hackett told YSM Sports Media about his belief that Terence Crawford should be #1 pound-for-pound.
“When he fought Viktor Postol, he [Crawford] it was too small. When he fights [Yuriorkis] Gamboa, he didn’t know enough. There was a lot of s***. “If he beats Canelo, he’s the worst mother in the last 30 years,” Hackett said of Terence.
“Right now in the game, it has to be Bud, and maybe Inoue after that,” Hackett continued regarding his belief that Crawford should be #1 pound-for-pound in the game. “Bud, people don’t get it. He was counted a long time ago. He has been winning and hitting big**.
It’s too early to tell if Crawford will get a fight with Canelo in 2025. Nothing is official yet, and there is a good chance that Canelo will turn down that fight. It’s a no-win type of match for Canelo, as Crawford gets more than he does. If he beats Crawford, there is no real gain. Crawford beating Canelo will be huge, and so will payday. Money alone is Crawford’s victory.
Qualification Limits
“The tank has always been a 130, 135-pounder. “People try to say that Tank was a 126-pounder,” Hackett said. “I fought a few cards with Tank. He never made 126. I say Bud was beating us*** at 135, 140, 147, and he just won the belt at 154.
“Champion at 135, uncontested at 140 and 147, right? He then won another belt at 154. “He’s still undefeated,” Hackett said of Crawford. “A lot of steps up, a lot of guys who had to beat him. A lot of guys who were supposed to be too big for her. Very fast, very strong. This one was supposed to be very experienced, and he beat them all. He gave Gamboa his first loss.”
Again, winning four division world titles doesn’t mean Crawford is great because he didn’t beat anyone to win his four division titles.
