Craig Newmark pledges $100M to fight hacking of foreign governments
Craigslist founder Craig Newmark plans to donate $100 million to continue strengthening US cybersecurity, addressing what he sees as a growing threat from foreign governments, he tells the WSJ. Part of the funding will focus on protecting power grids and other infrastructure from cyber attacks; part will be dedicated to educating people about what is called cybersecurity hygiene.
Newmark, 71, has given or pledged more than $400 million since he started studying philanthropy in 2015, with cybersecurity at the top of his list of causes. (He told Fortune last year that the threat to America from bad actors is now a “hands-on” situation.)
Newmark, who also focuses on the free and independent press and, to a lesser extent, dove rescue, tells the Journal that his giving is motivated by Jewish principles. get mine—fixing the world—he learned it from his Sunday school teachers. Separately he told Fortune that the plan was to get all his wealth out of his life.
