While airing on Friday, October 11, the episode of The Graham Norton ShowHart, 51, shared how Gomez’s documentary My Mind and Me inspired him to write about his journey with chronic illness in his latest book, I Was Not Completely Faithful To You.
“It’s amazing that I’m on the show with Selena,” said Hart. “It makes me bitter.” (Hart appeared on the talk show alongside Gomez, 32, Ncuti Gatwa again Zoe Saldana.)
“When I saw your documentary on Apple about the severity of your illness, I thought, ‘Am I sharing? Do I have to do this?’” Hart told Gomez. “Because it feels like sharing is vulnerable, it’s not something I’ve ever done before. And I watched your documentary and I just thought, ‘Of course,’ and that’s what kept me writing.”
At this point, Gomez broke down in tears and appeared emotional, reaching forward to take Hart’s hand and say thank you.
“So, the fact that I’m on this show with you, honestly, I’m – and in the movie, witnessing somebody in the pain that I was in, because of various conditions but we, you know, we know what a terminal illness is like,” Hart continued. “It’s always loud there. I know what it’s like – in a very different way. You know, I wasn’t on stage as a pop star, but I was backstage at the BBC trying to carry on, not knowing whether to carry on.”
Hart ended the heartfelt moment by saying, “It’s amazing that Selena is here and I think she’s amazing,” before joking, “Now, come back to me.”
My Mind and Me released on Apple TV+ in November 2022. It follows Gomez through six years of her career, documenting her life struggles after being diagnosed with lupus and dementia. (Gomez was diagnosed with lupus in 2013, underwent a kidney transplant in 2017. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2018.)
Hart’s book, I Was Not Completely Faithful To Youpublished Thursday, October 10. According to the official synopsis, the book is “filled with hard-earned wisdom and gentle truths” as Hart takes the reader on “a journey from illness to recovery.”
Gomez has previously been open about her health challenges. Speaking at a women’s dinner last month, the actress revealed that she wasn’t ashamed of her bipolar disorder or that she couldn’t carry a child.
“I really believe that you have the power to be vulnerable and tell people when you need help and want help,” she said in September. “That’s not a shame. So, yes, I share that I cannot carry a child. Yes, I share that I have bipolar [disorder]. F- off.” She went on to say that she wants to use her platform to empower other women.
“I want to be a lawyer for women only, that’s why I’m participating,” she continued. “That’s why I like to be honest, because everyone is going through something. I am me and that is all I can be.”
