Coal India contributes Rs 28,930 crore to exchequer in April-September

Coal India Ltd’s contribution to the state-owned finance company fell slightly by 0.6 percent to Rs 28,930.27 crore in the first half of the ongoing fiscal year.
Coal India Ltd (CIL), which accounts for more than 80 per cent of domestic coal production, paid Rs 29,122.13 crore to the government exchequer during April-September of FY24, according to provisional figures of the coal ministry.
The total amount paid by the government in September also fell by 11.1 percent to Rs 4,335.24 crore from Rs 4,878.84 crore paid in the corresponding month of FY24.
Of the total Rs 28,930.27 crore paid into the state exchequer during April-September FY25, the highest amount of Rs 6,452.30 crore went to Jharkhand government, followed by Rs 6,383.14 crore to Odisha government, Rs 5,432 to Rs 5,432 of Pradesh, and Rs 2,782.25 crore to Maharashtra, among others.
Coal-producing states have received funding from royalties, the District Mineral Foundation (DMF) and the National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET), among others.
Earlier the government had said that coal producing countries have received Rs 1.52 lakh crore in the last nine years from royalty, DMF and NMET.
The coal mining sector has been shown to be a major driver of economic growth in petroleum-producing states.
PSU’s coal output during April-September of the current financial year increased by 2.5 percent to 341.5 MT, over 332.9 MT in the year-ago period.
Coal India’s production rose 10 percent to 773.6 million tonnes in 2023-24 but fell short of its target production of 780 MT for the fiscal year.
The company’s output was 703.2 MT in the previous financial year 2022-23.
