Cannabis cafes approved by Newsom in California would be ‘an absolute disaster,’ says celebrity chef.
Celebrity chef and restaurateur Andrew Gruel discusses how restaurants can prepare if a long-term deal is not reached on the port strike, he touches on consumer psychology and Amsterdam-style restaurants in California.
Another celebrity chef is making his voice heard, warning that the introduction of Amsterdam-style cannabis restaurants in California would be “a huge disaster.”
In an interview with FOX Business’ “Varney & Co.,” Friday, chef and restaurateur Andrew Gruel weighed in on why he believes the introduction won’t go over well in the Golden State.
“I’m an open market guy.” The celebrity chef said, “as long as you don’t violate someone’s freedom, I would say go for it.”
But as for California, that’s where the celebrity chef expressed his disapproval.
“The sad truth is, in California, this is not going to work because you don’t have an established regulatory framework where you can actually be the police.”

At the end of September, California Gov. Gavin Newsom approved Assembly Bill 1775, which authorizes local authorities to allow licensed marijuana vendors to prepare and sell food and non-alcoholic beverages, as well as host and sell tickets to events on their licensed premises.
This means that dispensaries can function as cafes – complete with hot food, drinks, and live music concerts.

“We can see that there are bars and restaurants where drunk people are everywhere,” said the chef in opposition to this action. “A person is stabbed and nothing happens, they are released and go back to the street.”
Gruel added, “California already smells like… you know, the world’s skunk fair, everybody’s smoking weed everywhere, but now we’re introducing this to a food court, and you might have kids around.”

“I just don’t think Newsom can handle this. I don’t think the state of California can handle this,” he said.
“[If] this was Florida or some other state, I would say, yeah, go for it. Now, you’ve got a few guys eating extra donuts and getting high in the cafe… but in California, I’m telling you, it would be a disaster.”
