Can Nintendo’s Alarmo run Doom? Gambling can be

That’s exactly what hacker GaryOberNicht, who recently discovered how to apply custom firmware to Alarmo, in a video posted to Mastodon and their X account yesterday. In it, they play by answering or pressing the mushroom-shaped bridge on top of Alarmo to move and press other buttons to shoot or open doors. Here, see:

Gary said “it’s possible to load the shareware version of Doom entirely from a USB, without modifying Alarmo.” And they’ve put the software and instructions for using it on Github, so almost any Alarmo owner with enough experience and determination can do it, too. Best of all, it can be done without opening the watch at all.

How did they pull this off? Gary explains in a blog post that after someone named Spinda hacked the Alarmo (via Flipper Zero) and dumped the firmware on the head, Gary made a method using USB mode and the USB-C port to customize the Alarmo. external firmware, instead.

Given how easy it seems to be to reproduce what Gary has done, the maintenance of the Alarmo software is unlikely to stop. Annihilation. Of course, whether any efforts by the online community to turn the Alarmo into a weird game console will be received will likely depend on how Nintendo, who has been very active in copyright disputes recently, feels about it.
