Brazil’s Lula Is In Intensive Care After Brain Surgery
SAO PAULO – Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is recovering in the intensive care unit after surgery for internal bleeding in the heart, Sirio-Libanes Hospital said in a statement early Tuesday.
The surgery was performed after the 79-year-old leader suffered a headache that doctors believe was the result of a fall at home in October.
The hospital said Lula, who flew from the capital Brasilia for treatment 1,000 kilometers south (620 miles) in Sao Paulo, was “well, being monitored in an ICU bed” after bleeding.
Brazil’s presidential office has yet to comment.
Lula canceled a trip to Russia for the BRICS summit after the accident, her office said at the time. It left him with a visible wound on the back of his head, above his neck.
Srio-Libanes said a press conference would be held at 9 a.m. local time (12 a.m. GMT) to discuss the operation.
