Boot Ennis: Is 154 the Only Way to the World Title?
Coach Stephen Edwards says Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis is not looking at anyone. He thinks it’s things that are “going on behind the scenes, and his promoters are trying to figure out what they can get for him on 147.

IBF welterweight champion Ennis (33-0, 29 KOs) isn’t helping himself by turning down fights against WBC junior middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. and Teofimo Lopez. Those would have been huge for the Brothers.
Boots would have fought Vergil on Turki Al-Shiekh’s card on February 22 in Riyadh, and it would have been a big payday for him. The fans believe that Ennis kidnapped Vergil Jr and did not want to take a dangerous game because he was afraid of being beaten.
Buti’s decision not to fight Vergil Jr. we came at a bad time for him. She recently had a bad match against Karen Chukhadzhian in their rematch on November 9, and some think her confidence is gone.
The Ducking Debate
“There are fighters who ignore their managers so they don’t fight, but I don’t think that works for him,” Stephen Edwards told YSM Sports Media about his belief that Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis doesn’t look after guys.
“I don’t think anyone is misleading. I just think there’s a lot of things going on behind the scenes, and they’re just trying to figure out who they can get in the ring, and you know his days are numbered at 147,” Stephen continued to ‘Boots.’
“I don’t think he’s saying, ‘I’m afraid to fight this guy.’ I just think a lot of things on the business side are not going well for him. He does a lot. “His team has to put those guys in the ring,” Edward said.
The boots are obviously not looking at anyone at 147 because no one is skilled enough to want to avoid them. But it looks like he dropped WBC interim junior middleweight champion Vergil Ortiz Jr. when he was given that fight recently. Ennis said he wants to stay at 147 to unify, but his situation there is not promising.
Ennis reportedly turned down a big payday to fight Vergil Jr. at his job on February 22, and looking bad for him.
Edwards’ Defense
“If he gets the unification against Brian Norman or the fight with Mario Barrios. Every time I see Conor Benn, they keep talking about Barrios. So, I know there’s some kind of conflict when you have a guy in your promotional stable, and one guy. [Benn] trying to fight.
“That must be difficult for Boots. “When Conor Benn gets Mario Barrios to fight and Boot wants to team up, that’s tough,” said Edwards.
If Ennis’ promoter, Eddie Hearn, chose to set up a fight between Conor Benn and WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios rather than help him by putting Barrios together, you can understand why that would upset him if he followed what was happening.
Boots said he didn’t know what happened during the Vergil Ortiz Jr. fight. given to him in 154. Jaron was talking about what was going on behind the scenes without him paying attention. If Boots’ management doesn’t keep him up to date, he’ll be surprised if Conor Benn gets a fight against Barrios instead.
If Conor gets that fight, Ennis needs to think about moving up to 154 because it means he probably won’t get a chance to achieve his goal of going uncontested at 147.
Assuming Conor wins against Barrios, he will use the WBC title in a big money fight against Manny Pacquiao rather than facing Ennis. He won’t fight him because his chances of success will be slim, and he can make a lot of money holding on to the WBC title that he used to attract the 45-year-old Pacquiao.
