Bohachuk Overcame Davis with Power Punches

Serhii Bohachuk (25-2, 24 KOs) looked powerful in dispatching Ishmael Davis (13-2, 6 KOs) by sixth-round TKO in their WBC junior middleweight title fight last Saturday in Riyadh.

Bohachuk’s Power Display

The fight was stopped after the sixth round by referee Hector Afu after Davis’ corner called for the contest to be stopped. With the hard shots that Bohachuk hit him with in the fifth and sixth rounds, Davis would not make it to the seventh without getting hit. The official stoppage time was 3:00 in the sixth round.

Through four rounds, the fight was at times competitive, with Ishmael having short moments but being heavily beaten by Bohachuk. In the fifth and sixth, it was one-sided with Ukrainian Bohachuk from Davis in the middle and close range.

Bohachuk statistics vs. Davis Punch

– Ishmael Davis: 65,223 punches for 29.1%
– Serhii Bohachuk: 135 of 414 for 32.6%

Most of Bohachuk’s shots coming into the fight were power punches, which explains why he quickly wore down Davis to stop in the sixth round. Bohachuk landed 108 power punches and 27 of the 414 jabs he threw in the fight. He had excellent accuracy on his power punches, hitting 41.1% of them. That’s a high number for a fighter of Bohachuk’s caliber.

Davis is different

Surprisingly, Davis thought he could fight Serhii inside. Such a mistake. Short punches from Bohhachuk resembled shots thrown by light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev. They don’t look powerful, but they do damage. It was nice that Davis didn’t try to adapt by walking, but it probably wouldn’t have mattered.

Davis’ promoter, Eddie Hearn, looked dejected to the crowd after watching him get dropped by a left hook from Bohachuk in the second round. Ishmael, 29, fought well in the first round, landing a curved right hand that backed up former WBC 154-lb interim champion Bohachuk.

Davis nailed Bohachuk with a nice right hand in the fourth round, but that wasn’t enough to put him off. Serhii kept pressing him, punching him hard and not letting him breathe much during the attack.

Davis’ movement wasn’t enough to prevent Bohachuk from crossing the ring and continuing to pummel him with GGG-esque power shots. The punches weren’t thrown very fast, but man, they wore Ishmael down.

Bohachuk is now a WBC challenger to 154-lb champion Sebastian ‘The Towering Inferno’ Fundora. He won’t be getting the title anytime soon, unfortunately. Fundora will be defending Errol Spence next, and may choose to fight someone after that in a money fight, such as Terence Crawford.

An interesting fight that I would like to see Bohachuk against Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis. However, considering Boots’ decision to stay at welterweight to try and consolidate the division, he will probably turn down a serious fight against Bohachuk, regardless of how much money Turki Alalshikh was offering him. It will be interesting to see how Ennis trades shooting power against Bohachuk.

With Jaron’s strong defense, Bohachuk would have a field day against him, come at will and have an easier time than he did against Davis. Boots promoted by Hearn. He would probably resist the idea of Ennis fighting Bohachuk, knowing that it would not end well for him.
