Best Video Doorbells of 2024
Video storage
Keeping pictures of attackers or deck robbers (or similar problems) can be important. Even cheap doorbells often come with a subscription option to store video in the cloud (usually for a few dollars a month). Some have storage options, if you’d like to avoid those recurring fees, so read the details carefully.
AI recognition
Object recognition using AI features is very important for a video doorbell, allowing the gadget to recognize packages, people, animals and vehicles and send you alerts only about what is important. In our experience, doorbells are often heard by runners and people walking their pets, but good recognition avoids car and animal alerts, to save stress. Some companies keep item recognition after you sign up, while others include it for free.
Smart home compatibility
If you already have a security system or preferred voice assistant, such as Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, always look for a doorbell that works with your current choice. Amazon products often limit doorbells to Alexa only. Apple Siri and Apple Home compatibility is very hard to find here, especially in budget options.
Wired vs. wireless
Battery models are easier to install, but sometimes (not always) more expensive. Corded models are often the best option for savings. We found a selection of both options at reasonable prices.
Sound quality
If you like the idea of talking outside your door, look for two-way audio, preferably with noise canceling or similar features. We test the sound quality of every doorbell we review to make sure you can have a conversation.
Field of view and resolution
Video doorbells don’t require a wide field of view, but they are a good quality to have when facing a large front yard. Also, high resolution makes it easier to see faces and other important details, so it’s good to get a model with at least HD.
