David Benavidez says David Morrell has been complaining about drug testing for their February 1 fight, and he believes he doesn’t want to be tested by VADA.
Interim WBA light heavyweight champion Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) is suspicious, saying ‘regular’ WBA champion Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) may be worried “something might come up” in one of his tests.

Some fans see Benavidez’s appeal as he builds the first base of the PED is an excuse premature to blame the possible loss of Morrell on the use of steroids.
Just as Benaivdez mentioned steroids during the build-up, people will view Morrell’s victory with suspicion. Morrell wouldn’t even test for PEDs so people would believe he was using because of the association of steroids with his name during the build.
Benavidez they can get less criticism from fans, and his stock wouldn’t have dropped much if they believed Morrell was dirty. It doesn’t matter that Morrell never tested positive for steroids. Mentioning it by Benavidez during interviews will lead people to believe that Morrell was using PEDS, and will hurt his victory.
“When he is fighting, go and look at the people he is fighting with. They said they did VADA, they didn’t David Morrell did VADA,” said David Benavidez speaking to MillCity Boxing. “There were two different fighters who did that.
“He tried to pull the same *** on me because we have 13 weeks in this game. When I wrestled with Caleb Plant, we had started testing at 14 weeks. Boo Boo Andrade 14 weeks out. How is this boy [Morrell] he is coming to his biggest fight, and he does not have to do VADA, and he is already accused of steroid use.
“I’m not saying you’re on steroids or anything like that, but if you don’t try to check VADA, the *** looks weird. And he says he is a lab rat because he is going to be tested. This is what it is. This is pure boxing. We do VADA on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
It would be better if Benavidez didn’t discuss PEDs before the fight because it seems like he’s making excuses if things don’t go well for him in the fight with Morrell.
“If you don’t like it, maybe you’re doing something, or you’re worried that something might come up in these VADA tests,” said Benavidez. I, have been tested more than anyone in VADA, and those are the facts. I have been tested more than 30 times, and I have never complained. I never said I was a lab rat.
“This boy [Morrell] he was even tested three times, and he says he is a lab rat. Go look at the wars and look at the people who accuse him. Me, I have never been charged with taking sterios. Then if you see the press conference, as soon as I said, ‘Steroids, you didn’t want to test,’ that’s when Luis DeCubas stood up and started talking ***. Then they left.
“So, I don’t know. You be the judge of that. I point things out, but you guys won’t play with me like I’m an idiot. If there are VADA tests, let’s do it, let’s keep our fists clean,” said Benavidez.
