David Benavidez will face WBA ‘regular’ light heavyweight champion David Morrell on February 1 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The fight will be announced next week.
Fans will see Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) replaced by Cuban talent Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs), who has more power, hand speed, and overall skill than the Mexican ‘Monster. ‘ or should I say, ‘The beast of Ecuador.’ If Benavidez loses to Morrell, he can forget the Canelo Alvarez fight forever because he won’t be able to redeem himself in time to get in the mood to fight the superstar before he retires.
Benavidez is a favorite among boxing fans who are unfamiliar with Morrell, but that’s because they haven’t seen the Cuban star. We were seeing Morrell’s win because of Benavidez’s aggressiveness, some say, ‘recklessness’ which puts him in a good position to stick goals in front of his opponents so he can focus on throwing balls.
The great Benavidez shied away from that style of fighting when he fought at super middleweight because he was so much bigger than his opponents, but when he moved up to 175 last summer to make his weight class debut against Oleksandr Gvozdyk, he found out just how hard life is. it will be up to him. Gvozdyk was pounding Benavidez with a lot of hard punches and dominated the second half of the fight.
There is no word yet on who will be on the undercard, but it may not matter because there is enough fan interest in the Benavidez vs. Morrell for the event to do well without a main card.
The Benavidez-Morrell fight was previously scheduled for January 25, but it will be moved to a week later, which is no big deal. Whoever wins could challenge for the WBC title after light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev faces Dmitry Bivol in a rematch.
