Benavidez Sr.: Son Will “Drown” Morrell

Coach Jose Benavidez Sr. says that his son, David Benavidez, will take David Morrell into deep water and drown him in their fight in 29 days on February 1st on PBC on Prime Video PPV in Las Vegas.

Jose Sr. feels Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) can wear down ‘regular’ WBA light heavyweight champion Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) with body shots and pressure.

The Benavidez program

“We don’t know. Everyone’s style is different,” said Jose Benavidez Sr. to YSM Sports Media when asked if David Morrell is a stronger opponent for David Benavidez than Caleb Plant and Demetrius Andrade.

“David Morrell is a fighting champion, a highly decorated fighter, a two-time world champion at 168 and 175. He is left-handed. We don’t know [if Morrell is tougher than Plant and Andrade]but from now on, we train as if you are the best fighter in our profession. We have to think about that.

“We will not take David Morrell lightly. We don’t know how big his heart is. We will take him to deep water, and we will see if he can swim. Otherwise, you will drown. The plan is not just to win the war. It looks amazing,” Benavidez Sr. said.

Morrell is much bigger, stronger, and smaller than Plant and Andrade. Therefore, for Jose Sr. relying on Benavidez to do the same thing for him to do against those fighters, he could be in for a big disappointment on February 1st.

“The story is all about these traveling heroes. They don’t want to be beaten. So, be very careful. They use their legs a lot,” said Jose Sr. “I hope that David Morrell will come and fight and show people that he is the best at 175, and that will end with a knockout.”

Morrell doesn’t travel much. If it moves, it stops in front of its competitors. He doesn’t move in the ring but looks to the side with his upper body. Morrell will be there for Benavidez to exchange shots.

The punches that Morrell throws are much harder than the guys the Mexican Monster has fought during his career and he may not last long if he starts getting hit by Cuba.

Body Targeting

“If he’s careful, using his legs and moving around, it’s going to take us a while because if you have a moving fight, it makes it a little difficult,” Jose Sr. said. “I’m sure David [Benavidez] he’s going to use that and start breaking that body and start hurting him. “

The shot that Morrell hit his last opponent, Radivoje Kalajdzic, on August 3rd to knock down Benavidez or hurt him so badly that he couldn’t defend himself and a lot followed. Morrell had Radivoje injured several times in their fight at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.

“Hopefully, we can get him out of there before the ninth or tenth round,” Benavidez Sr. said.
