Benavidez: “Morrell Tried To Hurt Me With The Belt!”

David Benavidez believes David Morrell was trying to hurt him to get out of the fight when he threw away his WBA light heavyweight belt after shoving him during their December 17 fight in Miami. Benavidez seems confused about the nature of his injury.

Benavidez (29-0, 24 KOs) became angry when Morrell (11-0, 9 KOs) refused to shake his hand. So, to deal with his shame and anger, he showed Morrell, who retaliated by throwing his WBA belt at him. The belt just narrowly missed Benavidez’s head. Morrell interpreted this action as saying that he was trying to get out of the fight by hurting him.

You may look at it another way. Benavidez was the one trying to get out of the fight by shoving Morrell, hoping to punch him in the face in retaliation. It was Benavidez who started it with a shove. What did he expect Morrell to do?

Was Morrell Scared?

“I really want to beat the *** out of Morrell, and that’s exactly what I intend to do,” David Benavidez told Fighthype, still lamenting David Morrell’s refusal to shake his hand during their press conference.

“For me, I know he is afraid because he is looking for ways to get out. Who throws belts in someone’s face? That’s a tough belt, bro,” Benavidez said of Morrell throwing his WBA world title belt at him during their fight after he was shoved hard without warning.

“Me, throwing that belt in your face, I know in my mind that I will hit you, and the fight will end because you will be cut. That’s exactly what he did. He also directed me to my head. “He didn’t try to miss,” said Benavidez.

Benavidez Started

There would have been no problem if Benavidez had controlled the violence when Morrell refused to shake his hand. Does he live by pushing everyone if they don’t want to shake hands?

“From the first press conference where we looked face to face, I felt fear in him,” Benavidez said of Morrell. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, and it’s the same thing as this. I said, ‘Be careful what you ask for because I might be there to give it to you.

“This makes the war better. I did all that. I pushed him. I did a press conference thing, and now a lot of people are interested in this fight. You should because this is going to be a good fight. David Morrell is a good fighter. I am a big fighter.

Will Morrell participate?

“We’re going to war, and if he really means what he says, he’s going to stand there and go toe to toe with me. I don’t think you will. I’m 100% ready to go in when I do. “I’m going to hurt that guy as much as I can,” said Benavidez.

It may not work for Benavidez to stand toe to toe with a big punch like Morrell because he hits hard and will use all the shots he usually throws.

Benavidez’s volume hitting has worked for him at 168 against younger, older, and weaker opponents. But at 175, he’ll have to reinvent himself if he doesn’t want his career to take off, starting with the Morrell fight.
