Baba Siddique: An Indian politician was killed in Mumbai

New Delhi – A top politician in India’s financial capital, Mumbai, who was also known for his close ties to Bollywood, has been shot dead just weeks before a crucial national election.
Father Siddique, 66, was shot multiple times outside his son’s office in Mumbai on Saturday night, police said in a statement. He later succumbed to his injuries at Lilavati Hospital in the city.
Siddique has been associated with the Indian National Congress party for decades but had recently joined the party that rules the state of Maharashtra. He was close to many Bollywood stars and was known to throw lavish parties.
The deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar, from the same political party as Siddique, said he was shocked by the killings.
“The incident will be thoroughly investigated and strict action will be taken against the attackers. The mastermind of this attack will also be followed,” said Pawar in a statement.
The Press Trust of India news agency reported that two suspects have been arrested in the attack, and police are looking for another.
An NDTV anchor said the two suspects claimed to be part of a gang that has killed many people in the past.
Elections in the state of Maharashtra are expected to be held in November.
