Aubrey Plaza’s Husband Jeff Baena Received ‘Death Threats’ After Marriage

Aubrey Plazamarriage of the deceased Jeff Baena allegedly rubbed his most devoted, devoted followers the wrong way.

“Oh my God. Jeff got death threats in his DMs,” Plaza, 40, told Cosmopolitan in a 2022 profile, referring to his few bisexual fans who were bemoaning his singleness on social media. “I think so. People put a lot of things into marriage, but it wasn’t the big statement I was trying to make when I wanted everyone to react to it.”

Plaza and Baena were together from 2011 until his sudden and unexpected death in January 2025. To celebrate ten years of dating, the pair tied the knot in 2020 during the coronavirus pandemic.

“A lot of things happened during the COVID period for me. Yes, we got married. It’s a big story,” Plaza recalled during a December 2021 appearance on the show The Ellen DeGeneres Show. “We were bored one night. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s true, look at it.”

He added at the time, “We were locked up. Things got a little crazy, especially in my house. My husband really got into it and when I say tying, I mean 50 shirts a day.”

Plaza and Baena got married at home in what he described as witchcraft.

“I built an altar of instant love in our yard. The facts of our love, small stones, smoke, fire. Things like that,” he told host Ellen DeGeneres. “Then a man from Alhambra appeared wearing a Hawaiian shirt and carrying a bag [to perform the ceremony]. … I don’t remember much of it, it was vague. But I’m sure it’s legal.”

While talking to CosmoPlaza also explained about the magical event and her love of content witchcraft.

“I’ve always loved Halloween. There was always a witchy vibe in Delaware where I grew up and my mother was always a witch. I don’t know how to explain it. It runs in our blood,” he laughed. “I have Basque blood – like many of the witches who were burned at the stake in the European witch trials. My mother always made me believe in magic. No, like magic out of the rabbit hole – he was always working on another wavelength.

He added, “Also, when I was in middle school, I would go with my friends to the forest to do strange spells and such. Along the way, I got into herbs and mushrooms and oils and other pagan things. It was less ‘I’m doing an experiment to use spiritual power’ and less ‘I’m using these herbs medicinally’ or something.”

Us Weekly confirmed on Saturday, January 4, that Baena, an indie filmmaker, has died by suicide at the age of 47. Plaza has not spoken publicly about his death.

Besides Plaza, Baena is survived by his parents, step-parent and siblings.
