According to the medical examiner’s records reviewed by Us WeeklyBaena’s official cause of death is listed as suicide. The same doctor’s records revealed that an autopsy was performed and his body could be released to the family. At press time, the status of the case is still listed as “open” despite the cause of death still being determined.
No other causes or significant circumstances surrounding Baena’s passing have been listed.
Baena died on Friday, January 3, at the age of 47, according to the same medical examiner’s records that were reviewed. Us. Until now, the circumstances surrounding his death were unknown.
Baena is survived by Plaza, 40, who has not been able to talk about her husband’s passing. Us has reached the comment.

Baena and Plaza started dating in 2011 and officially tied the knot in 2020 after ten years together. The pair kept their relationship very private, but Plaza talked about his marriage to Baena during a December 2021 appearance. The Ellen Degeneres Show.
“A lot of things happened during the COVID period for me. Yes, we got married. It’s a big story,” Plaza recalled at the time. “We were bored one night. We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s true, look at it.”
I Agatha Everything Goes alum shared when she and her husband were married at home during the shutdown.
“I built an altar of instant love in our yard. The facts of our love, small stones, smoke, fire. Things like that,” he continued at the time. “Then a man from Alhambra appeared wearing a Hawaiian shirt and carrying a bag [to perform the ceremony]. … I don’t remember much of it, it was vague. But I’m sure it’s legal.”
Although both Baena and Plaza have their own successful solo careers, they have been able to work together on many projects, including. Life After Beth, Small Hours again Spin Me Round.
“He’s beautiful. I would have worked with him if it wasn’t for my wife, but luckily she is,” Baena told Reel Talker about a possible collaboration with his wife in August 2022. “It’s an opportunity to do something interesting. [together] where we are both fulfilled – how rare is that?”
Months before Baena’s death, Plaza had briefly discussed her marriage during an appearance in September 2024. The Howard Stern Show. “I wouldn’t go [from dating actors],” he laughed at the time. “I am married to a writer/director. I’ve never, like, dated an actor [or] you’ve had an actor for a long time.”
He added, “I think about that and think, like, ‘Oh God, I don’t want to be with myself’ or, ‘I don’t want to do that.’ But then, sometimes, I see a couple of characters and you’re like, ‘Wow, look at them. They must really be laughing.’”
